Gokyo Lakes Trek:
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is a well-known route in the Everest region that leads to a series of high-altitude lakes and wide mountain viewpoints. The trail offers a quieter alternative to the main Everest Base Camp route, with open valleys, glacier scenery, and clear views of the surrounding peaks.
The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through small settlements and forested sections, reaching Phakding and then Namche Bazaar. Namche is the main trading village in the region and serves as an important stop for rest and acclimatization.
Beyond Namche, the trail continues toward the Gokyo Valley. The landscape becomes more open and alpine, with glaciers and rocky terrain. A main highlight is the series of Gokyo Lakes, known for their deep blue color and high elevation setting. A viewpoint above the lakes offers wide views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and nearby peaks such as Thamserku, Cholatse, and Taboche.
The route also passes monasteries, prayer wheels, and traditional Sherpa villages. Wildlife may be seen in the lower forest zones, including musk deer, Himalayan tahr, and colorful Himalayan monal birds. These areas form part of Sagarmatha National Park, which protects the region’s natural and cultural environment.
This trek is moderately difficult, with daily walking times of 5 to 7 hours. Accommodation is in teahouses along the route. The Gokyo Lakes Trek suits trekkers who want high mountain scenery with fewer crowds than the main Everest trail.
