Kancchenjunga Base Camp Trek:
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek leads into eastern Nepal, where trails run close to Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. This region receives fewer trekkers, and the routes pass through forests, river valleys, and remote settlements with strong local traditions. The trek offers long walking days in a quiet mountain environment.
The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, followed by a drive through Ilam to Taplejung. Ilam is known for its tea fields, where rows of green hills stretch across the landscape. From Taplejung, the trail moves north through protected forest and rural villages into the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
The scenery changes from low hills and farmland to dense forest and high alpine terrain. Views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and other Himalayan peaks appear along the route, depending on weather conditions. The region is also known for wildlife such as red panda and snow leopard, though sightings remain rare. Villages along the way are home mainly to Rai and Limbu communities, where daily life follows long-standing traditions.
This trek is demanding due to its length, remoteness, and daily walking hours of 6 to 8 hours or more. Accommodation is in basic teahouses or homestays, with limited facilities in higher sections. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is suited for experienced trekkers who are comfortable with long itineraries and remote conditions.
For an optional trekking route you can also have a look at the Everest Base Camp Trek.
